December 12th, 2010 I birthed my first beautiful 9 bl. 4oz. baby girl into this world after forty hours and forty size minutes of labor. I had no idea before then what a shoulder dystocia was or a nuchal hand. I had no idea my body could defy me in such ways that it did. I didn’t know I could lose control. When she finally came out she was no breathing, but three amazing midwifes were there to save her. I wasn’t scared at any time, I was in safe hands. I was educated and confident in my decision. I made the decision to birth out of hospital at the Madison Birth Center. I made the choice to hire midwives instead of an OB/GYN. That choice rocked my soul. A few months later my student midwife passed away. HE changed my life and I will forever be grateful for the compassion and love he showed me. Today I fight for a woman’s right for a better birth because of him. Every birth experience matters.
